April showers bring May flowers. It’s a common saying everyone knows. While we wait for the flowers to bloom though, there are some things we can do to prepare for the more severe April showers. Here are five tips to keep you and your household safe during storms this spring.
Have a Plan. Sit down with your family and develop a plan together. Discuss best practices if weather emergencies strike when you are at work, school or home. Identify responsibilities for each member of the household. Know where everyone should go in your home for the safest shelter.
Make a Kit. While planning, take the time to organize basic supplies your household could need during a disaster. Kits should include food, water, a flashlight, a battery powered radio and extra batteries, a first aid kit, medicine, a cell phone and a cell phone charger.
Educate. Make sure you and your household understand the difference between storm watches and warnings. A watch means that severe weather is possible. A warning means that severe weather is occurring and that you should find shelter immediately.
Act Quickly. If you hear thunder, then lightning is not far behind. Meaning, you are in danger. If a watch is issued, be alert. If a warning is issued, follow your plan quickly.
Be Smart After the Storm. Despite our best efforts, severe storms can create extended power outages. Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Be aware of hazards and debris left by the storm. Never touch downed power lines or anything in contact with those lines.
